- Leaf browning from veins outward. On live oaks — veins turn yellow then brown while the tip stays green. Classic oak wilt symptom.
- Rapid canopy loss in summer. A live oak dropping 30–50% of its canopy in weeks, especially May through September, is a red flag.
- Fungal mats on red oaks. Red oaks (Spanish, blackjack, shumard) can develop pressure pads under the bark that split and smell like fermented fruit.
- Nearby infected trees. Oak wilt spreads through interconnected root systems. If a neighbor's oak died fast, yours is at risk.
How we treat & prevent oak wilt
- On-site inspection. We identify the species, stage, and whether root grafts to neighboring oaks are likely. Free.
- Macro-infusion (propiconazole) for at-risk or early-stage live oaks — the industry-standard preventive & therapeutic treatment.
- Root-graft trenching for confirmed outbreaks, to break underground spread to healthy oaks 100+ ft away.
- Safe removal + disposal of dead red oaks — chipped and hauled off-site, never left as firewood.
- Ongoing wound care plan for your remaining oaks. Written, so anyone on your property knows the rules.
Prevention that actually works
- Never prune oaks Feb 1 – June 30. This is peak spore transmission season in Central Texas. Any fresh wound attracts sap-feeding beetles carrying the fungus.
- Paint every oak wound immediately. Cuts, storm damage, lawn-mower scrapes — seal them within 15 minutes with pruning paint, year-round. Not optional in Austin.
- Trench to break root grafts. For confirmed outbreaks, a 4-ft deep trench between the infected tree and healthy oaks stops underground spread.
- Sterilize tools between trees. Chainsaw chains, hand saws, climbing spikes — bleach or Lysol between every oak, no exceptions.
FAQ
How much does oak wilt treatment cost in Austin?
Preventive macro-infusion (propiconazole injection) typically runs $200–$450 per tree depending on trunk diameter. Trenching to stop root spread is quoted per linear foot after we see the site. We give you a free written estimate before any work.
When is oak wilt season in Central Texas?
The highest-risk pruning window is February 1 through June 30, when sap-feeding beetles are most active and the fungus is at peak spore production. Outside that window, still paint every wound immediately.
Can an infected live oak be saved?
Sometimes — if caught early. Macro-infusion with propiconazole slows or halts progression in 60–70% of live oaks treated in the first symptom stages. Red oaks rarely recover and usually need removal to protect the rest of the property.
Do I need to remove an oak that died from oak wilt?
Yes. Red oaks especially — dead oak wilt trees can produce fungal mats that spread spores to healthy oaks. We remove and dispose of the wood safely (never firewood, never mulch from infected wood).
Do you paint pruning cuts on oaks year-round?
Every single time, without exception. It costs us seconds; skipping it can cost you a $3,000 heritage oak. This is standard practice on every Douglas Tree Service crew.
How fast does oak wilt kill a tree?
Red oaks can die in 3–6 weeks once symptoms appear. Live oaks typically decline over 6 months to 2 years. That's why fast diagnosis and treatment matter — call us as soon as you see canopy thinning.
