Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal — Which Is Right for You?

After a tree comes down, you're left with a stump — and two different services with confusingly similar names. Stump grinding and stump removal solve the same problem in very different ways, at very different price points. Here's how to decide which one is right for your situation.

**Stump grinding: fast, affordable, leaves the root ball in place.** A stump grinder is a machine with a rotating carbide-tooth wheel that chews the stump down 4–12 inches below grade, turning it into wood chips. The chips are typically raked into the resulting hole (or hauled off if you prefer), covered with soil, and you can plant grass or lay sod on top within days. Stump grinding does NOT remove the underground root system — those roots stay in place and slowly decay over 5–10 years. For most Austin homeowners with a normal residential yard, grinding is the right choice: it's faster, cheaper, and cleaner.

**Stump removal: excavates the whole root ball.** Full stump removal pulls the stump AND the main root system out of the ground, usually with an excavator or backhoe. This leaves a large hole (often 4–6 feet across and 2–3 feet deep) that has to be backfilled with clean soil. It costs 3–5× more than grinding, requires heavy equipment access, and typically leaves the surrounding landscape torn up. Full removal only makes sense in specific cases.

**Cost comparison in Austin:**

- **Stump grinding**: typically $125–$400 depending on stump diameter, with additional cost for surface roots or hauling chips off-site. - **Full stump removal (excavation)**: typically $450–$1,500+ depending on stump size, root spread, and equipment access.

**When grinding is the right call (90% of the time):**

- You want to plant grass or a small ornamental over the spot - You need the stump out of the way for mowing or aesthetics - Budget matters - Heavy equipment access is limited - You don't plan to plant another large tree in the same spot

**When full removal is worth it:**

- You want to plant another *large* tree in the same location — the old root ball would compete with the new tree - You're pouring a slab, patio, or foundation over the spot and can't have any organic material below grade - The tree died from oak wilt or another root-transmissible disease and you want the infected roots gone - You're doing major landscape regrading and heavy equipment is already on site

**Ground stump chips: what to do with them.** A ground stump typically produces a pile of chips 2–3× the volume of the original stump (because they're aerated). Most Austin crews will backfill the hole with the chips for free, add topsoil, and rake it smooth. If you want the chips hauled off, that's usually a $50–$150 add-on. Some homeowners save the chips as mulch for garden beds — perfectly fine, as long as they're not from an oak wilt–infected tree.

**Timing after tree removal.** Most Austin tree crews can grind the stump the same day the tree comes down, if you request it up front. Coming back for a second visit adds a mobilization fee ($75–$150 typical). If you're getting a removal quote, always ask what stump grinding would add — bundling saves money.

**Bottom line:** if you're a typical Austin homeowner who wants the stump gone and the yard back to normal, grinding is almost always the right answer. Full removal is a specialized service for specific situations, not a default upgrade.
